Joey Bargsten has been composing music and creating experimental media and films since 1978.

His music has been played by the Indianapolis Symphony and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has been featured at New York’s Symphony Space, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Atlanta Arts Festival, and on National Public Radio’s International Concert Hall.

He received awards from the New Media INVISION Competition and PRINT Magazine’s Interaction 2000 Annual for BAD MIND TIME™ (www.badmindtime.com), a website described as “a charming personal entertainment system where Joycean puns and references to game shows collide randomly in an idiosyncratic homage to twentieth century art and pop culture.” (—Print Magazine). BAD MIND TIME™ also won the audience award at the 2004 Stuttgart Filmwinter Expanded Media Festival, and was included in the 2005 Web Bienniale (Istanbul), with subsequent presentations in Penang, Athens, and London.

In 2005, he completed the world’s first digital do-it-yourself iPod opera, Anatomy of Melancholy™, and has presented excerpts at the College Art Association Conference (Atlanta), at Future Music Oregon, and at a concert featuring the Flarf and Dusie poetry collectives (Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA). Bargsten was recently a winner of one of the 2013 Miami Knight Arts Challenge Awards for the presentation in 2015 of his new multimedia opera MelanchoLalaland. MelanchoLalaland™ was premiered in Miami Beach in September, 2015 (www.melancholalaland.com) .

His digital film American Sock™ (2001) was included in the 2002 Fluxus International Digital Festival, and won a Silver International Design Award from The Broadcast Design Association (Los Angeles, 2002). His search-engine art film PROJEK IAGHT™ (2005) was shown at the New York Minute Film Festival, and the San Francisco Bay-enniale (2005). Bargsten’s recent films have appeared at the Zero Film Festival, Los Angeles, and the BrainWash Film Festival (Oakland, CA).

Joey Bargsten has taught at University of Iowa, Georgia Tech, Atlanta College of Art and University of Oregon. He is currently teaching in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies at Florida Atlantic University, where he recently founded the experimental media ensemble meme™, and published his first book, Hybrid Forms and Syncretic Horizons (2011).

Bargsten was recently a winner of one of the 2013 Miami Knight Arts Challenge Awards for the presentation in 2015 of his new multimedia opera MELANCHOLALALAND™. He was one of five video artists invited to create motion visuals to accompany members of the New World Symphony in a concert recognizing the 100th Anniversary of the graphic arts association AIGA (January, 2014).

Bargsten taught at University of Iowa, Georgia Tech, and University of Oregon before his current appointment at Florida Atlantic University.
